My Own Little Secret.....

I wear two necklaces everyday under whatever top I am wearing.  One is for my engagement pendant. When I first met Bob, I didn't like to wear jewelry—mainly just a simple pair of earrings. When Bob and I got engaged, he gave me a beautiful sapphire pendant (my birthstone) surrounded by small diamonds (his birthstone), telling me I was central to his life.  He can be so incredibly sentimental.  It's a very romantic setting and I've worn it pretty much every day for the last 23 years. A few years ago, I added a small pendant picture of our spiritual teacher, Amma, to that necklace chain as she has become very central to both of us.

I added wearing a neck mala for the last 15 years (kind of like a rosary but in the Hindu tradition) that also has a pendant picture of Amma hanging on it.  I normally never take these necklaces out to wear for public view.  As it happens, for the Billions pilot shoot, Wardrobe could see that I had a couple of chains under my v-neck sweater.  She asked me to take them out, said they looked adorable and I should wear them as part of my wardrobe for the shoot.  I was so tickled to know that Amma would have a spot on Billions too! You’ll have to look awfully close and magnify that screen shot by about a 100 times to see her, but still, I love it that she is an Extra right along with me.  This happened again on my next job. Now, when I get to the set, I just wear them out as part of my wardrobe look and let them decide if they should be tucked in instead.

Over the last 12 years, I’ve taken to wearing a wrist mala, and as of last year, I now wear one on each wrist.  Neither have any small Amma picture pendant attached (at least not yet, that may change very soon) but just knowing they are part of my outfit, especially if the necklaces are not worn out, makes me feel like Amma is on set with me.  Such are the ways of a spiritual aspirant—I believe you can bring your devotion and practice to most any experience.

  1. I think Amma would laugh if she knew she was an Extra too!
